Band on Band: Tony Bullets
Tony Bullets is the pseudonym of Boston-based musician Evan Hughey. Originally from upstate New York, Tony grew up far away from the vape tricks and hoverboards of the city in a little town by the river called Elmira. After originally working primarily in electronic music, Tony seems to have found his comfort zone somewhere in between the playful story telling of folk music and the upbeat pacing of pop tunes.
Noted by Cereal + Sound and Obscure Sound for it’s transitions between melancholy and chipper, his debut EP “Homesick” has been described “Motel Crooner Pop”, “Jangle Pop”, and by Tony himself as “Pajama Pop” (although admittedly I have no idea what that means.) It is, however, hard to deny that alongside bandmates Grant Baker, Tim Leete of Cact!s Group, and Seth Holmes of Bothalso, Tony and the Spicy Boys have been aging like a fine cheese.
Often likened to the sounds of artists such as of Mac Demarco, Ariel Pink, and The Unicorns, Tony cites his major influences as some surprisingly disparate Musicians. From Weezer, to Connan Mockasin, to Tyler, The Creator, the line appears to be a little less than straight, but the product is what you might call a surprisingly attractive squiggle.
