Band on Band: Thee Sonomatics
Thee Sonomatics hail from the gritty industrial behemoth of Worcester, Massachusetts, and are steeped in the distorted garage rock tones of the Sonics, Link Wray, the Ventures and the Fabulous Wailers.
The band consists of Bill LeBeau on vocals and bass, Craig Fitzgerald on vocals and rhythm guitar, Tim Smith on smoking lead guitar and Jonny “Fez” Yonan on drums.
They’ve taken their inspiration from primitive, garage and surf bands around the world, like Mexico’s Cavernarios, Germany’s Die Zorros and Japan’s Neatbeats.
After a show at the Midway Cafe, Boston Groupie News’s Kenne Highland wrote: “From Worcester, Thee Sonomatics, doing garage/surf, but as tight as the Saturday 20 march 76 Gizmos. ‘Tainted Love’ sounding like 1976 Gizmos; after I went “yes, yes, yes, yes, YES!”, Tony Kaczynski said ‘that’s the Kenne Highland stamp of approval!’ When I dig ya, I LOVE IT TO DEATH!!!”
This October, the band provided three songs (“Radar,” “Black Widow” and “Hang On“) for the Mint 400 Records release, “Guitar Rebel” a tribute to Link Wray. The CD is part of Rockerzine’s RockBox, which ships this month just in time for Christmas.
Also appearing with Thee Sonomatics are PHILEEP, The Justin Arena Project, As Seen From Space and Sound Bandits. More info on the 12/28 show is available here.
